The Ministry of Making

The Ministry of Making exists to support and encourage creativity for all. You don't have to be "an artist" to come to us, you just need to be willing to explore your creativity, to give rein to your dream to imagine and to make. Perhaps you've always wanted to give yourself time to write, or paint or carve. Perhaps you're a newly graduated art student not sure of your next step, or an established artist wanting to give yourself time and space to rest, reflect and renew.

We share a meal together at least once a week, but, for the most part, you will self-cater and have access to your own (sometimes shared) kitchen with all facilities. Shops and a bank are a 3-minute walk away.

Accommodation is in private double rooms, although we do also have facilities/space to accommodate larger groups in mixed dormitories.

We have unlimited 4g wi-fi. Although it does not reach every part of the building, it is generally quick and reliable (storms notwithstanding!) There is a small charge of €5 per week to use it.

Giat has two supermarkets, a bank, a couple of cafe/restaurants and DIY/General store that sells a very limited amount of art supplies and a builder's yard.

In general it is necessary to bring what you need or order it in advance to be delivered by the time of your arrival.

Giat is a largish village with regular markets. There are also artisan craft fairs in which we usually participate. We always encourage our guests to interact and engage with the wider community, either by offering a demonstration or workshop or exhibition. This is by no means obligatory and is not always appropriate for work being undertaken. But if it's something you'd like to do, we can facilitate it. We also have connections with artists and facilities in our locality which we will be happy to connect you with. (For example, an outstanding stone-lithography workshop in a nearby town.)

We believe in the power of art to connect people and strengthen communities. In these times of conflict and displacement, we are determined to reach out beyond our walls to offer our support wherever it is needed. We are in the process of establishing a mobile facility that will offer community arts programmes in villages and towns across France and beyond.
